Job SummaryWe are seeking a detail-oriented and organized Construction Project Accountant to join our team. This role is responsible for managing the financial aspects of multiple construction projects, ensuring accurate job costing, contract billing, budget tracking, and financial reporting. The ideal candidate has strong accounting skills, construction industry experience, and the ability to work closely with project managers and operations teams.
Key Responsibilities- Manage project setup in the accounting system, including budgets, cost codes, contracts, and change orders
- Track project costs, commitments, subcontractor invoices, and purchase orders
- Prepare construction draws based on the project progress
- Review and reconcile job cost reports to ensure accuracy and completeness
- Monitor project budgets and identify cost overruns, discrepancies, and financial risks
- Support monthly project closeout procedures and prepare financial reports for management
- Work with project managers to analyze project performance, forecasting, and profitability
- Process subcontractor payments and ensure compliance with contract terms and lien waiver requirements
- Reconcile project-related balance sheet accounts, including WIP, retainage, and accrued expenses
- Assist with audits, year-end close, and internal reporting requirements
- Maintain accurate project documentation and accounting records
- Ensure compliance with company policies, accounting standards, and contract requirements
- Ensure strong internal controls over project expenditures
Qualifications- Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance
- 3–5+ years of experience in real estate development or construction accounting.
- Strong understanding of project-based accounting
- Experience with development pro formas and financial modeling
- Strong understanding of job costing, WIP reporting, progress billing, and retainage
- Experience with construction accounting software such as QuickBooks and Procore.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Strong communication skills and ability to collaborate across departments
Preferred Qualifications- Experience working with general contractors, subcontractors, or real estate development firms
- Knowledge of AIA billing, lien waivers, and contract compliance
- CPA designation or progress toward certification is a plus
