Job SummaryWe are seeking a skilled Crew Lead/Equipment Operator to join our DSSP and Excavation team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy equipment, including bobcat loaders and excavators, while also leading a sewer and water crew on-site. Must be able to run pipe, set barrels, and coordinate installation activities. This role requires strong mechanical knowledge, experience with construction equipment, and the ability to guide a crew to support large-scale projects. The Equipment Operator / Crew Lead will play a vital role in ensuring project timelines are met while maintaining high safety and quality standards.
Responsibilities- Operate equipment such as excavators, loaders, backhoes, and graders with precision and safety.
- Direct sewer and water crew activities, ensuring work is completed efficiently and to specification.
- Run pipe installation, set barrels, and oversee trenching/backfilling operations.
- Read and interpret blueprints, grades, and elevations to ensure accurate production.
- Perform routine inspections and maintenance on equipment to ensure optimal functioning.
- Assist with site preparation, grading, excavation, and labour activities as required.
- Follow all safety protocols and procedures to prevent accidents or injuries on-site.
- Coordinate with supervisors, truckers, and crew members to plan equipment use and daily tasks.
- Maintain accurate records of equipment operation, site progress, and maintenance activities.
- Support other construction activities requiring mechanical expertise or heavy equipment operation.
Requirements- Proven experience operating heavy equipment in excavation and underground utilities.
- Previous experience as a Crew lead , specifically in sewer and water installations.
- Must be able to understand and follow blueprints for grades and elevations.
- Strong knowledge of pipe installation, trench safety, and underground utility standards.
- Labour-focused role — must be physically fit and able to lift over 50 lbs.
- Class 5 License (required).
- Strong understanding of construction site safety standards and procedures.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively while leading a team.
- Ability to operate machinery for extended periods and perform manual tasks as required.
- Daily/Weekly progress reporting of projects.
Preferred Qualifications / Pre-QualificationsThe following certificates, training, and qualifications are considered a strong asset:
- Relevant equipment operation certification / tickets.
- Sewer and water installation training or experience.
- Ground disturbance / excavation safety training.
- Pipeline or trench safety certification.
- First Aid / CPR.
- WHMIS / CSTS / CSO (or equivalent safety training).
- Any additional construction, utility, or heavy equipment-related certifications.
Physical and job specific testing will be performed during the interview process.
