SummaryWestern Integrated Systems is seeking a highly skilled and motivated Field Service Electrical Technologist to join our growing team. This is a dynamic, field-based role involving daily travel to customer sites across various industries, as well as periodic travel across Canada and the United States.
The successful candidate will be responsible for troubleshooting, commissioning, and servicing industrial control systems, including PLCs, VFDs, HMIs, and Motor Control Centers (MCCs). This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands-on work, problem-solving in real-time, and working in diverse industrial environments.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:Field Service & Troubleshooting (Core Focus):- Travel daily to customer sites in a company vehicle to diagnose and resolve electrical and automation issues.
- Troubleshoot and repair:
- Control panels
- Motor Control Centers (MCCs)
- VFD Systems
- PLC/HMI Systems
- Perform root cause analysis on system failures and implement corrective actions.
- Provide emergency and scheduled service support to minimize customer downtime.
Commissioning & Start-Up:- Assist with commissioning and start-up of automation systems across the lower mainland, Canada and the U.S.
- Configure and validate PLCs, HMIs, VFDs, and communication networks.
- Support system integration, loop checks, and functional testing.
- Participate in Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) and Site Acceptance Testing (SAT).
Automation & Controls Support:- Work with and troubleshoot systems from major platforms including:
- Allen-Bradley
- Siemens
- Schnider Electric
- ABB
- Support PLC logic review, minor modifications, and diagnostics.
- Configure and troubleshoot industrial networks (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, etc.).
- Assist engineering team with field feedback and system improvements.
Electrical & Panel Work:- Work safely inside energized and de-energized electrical panels.
- Perform wiring modifications, terminations, and component replacements as needed.
- Inspect and verify proper installation of electrical equipment.
- Ensure all work complies with applicable codes and safety standards.
24/7 On-Call Support:- Participate in a rotating 24/7 on-call support schedule.
- Provide remote or on-site support for urgent customer issues.
- Maintain clear communication with customers during critical situations.
Customer Interaction:- Act as a front-line representative of Western Integrated Systems.
- Build strong relationships with customers through professionalism and technical expertise.
- Clearly communicate findings, solutions, and recommendations.
Travel Requirements:- Daily local travel to customer sites (company vehicle provided).
- Periodic travel across Canada and the United States for commissioning and support.
- Flexibility to travel on short notice when required.
REQUIRED SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONSElectrical Engineer or Electrical/Electronic Technician/Technologist, or equivalent work experience. Eligible for membership in EGBC or ASTTBC.
- Red Seal Electrician (preferred) or strong electrical background.
- Industrial electrical systems design/installations knowledge.
- 6-10 years of engineering experience in industrial automation systems integrations.
- Experience in the forestry, mining, and water-wastewater sectors is highly beneficial.
- Strong knowledge or leading industrial automation technologies (DCS, PLC, Drives, MCCs). Ability to apply knowledge to solve problems and improve customer productivity creatively.
- Strong troubleshooting skills in:
- PLCs, HMIs, and industrial networks
- VFDs and motor control systems
- MCCs and control panels
- Experience working with industrial automation platforms (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.).
- Comfortable reading electrical schematics and control drawings.
- Ability to work independently in field environments.
- Valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
- Bonus requirements:
- Good understanding of mechanical systems and instrumentation.
- Knowledge of safety standards and lockout/tagout procedures.
- Specific background in Rockwell Automation Systems (PLCs and VFDs).
- Electrical installation and integration with automation systems (turnkey projects).
