About the RoleBased in Nakusp, BC, the Marine Manager - Operations will lead and support continuous improvement initiatives for freshwater passenger ferry operations. This position requires a strong and hands-on leader who can effectively manage operational challenges within a unionized environment while maintaining a positive and productive workplace culture.
The successful candidate will oversee crews to ensure safe, efficient, and cost-effective fleet operations. Reporting directly to the General Manager, the Marine Manager - Operations will promote high operational performance, support employee development, and foster an innovative learning environment for all crew members.
Key Responsibilities- Lead marine crews operating freshwater passenger ferry services with a strong commitment to safety
- Provide leadership, coaching, and operational support through regular on-vessel presence
- Build strong working relationships that enhance employee morale and engagement
- Develop crew competency in emergency response procedures
- Liaise with federal and provincial regulatory agencies
- Prepare regular, ad hoc, monthly, and annual operational reports using qualitative and quantitative data
- Conduct risk assessments and implement standard operating procedures
- Ensure compliance with collective agreements
- Monitor crew compliance with applicable regulations and governing agencies
- Maintain a visible operational presence onboard vessels, including participation in inspections and periodic voyages
- Collaborate with the Safety and Compliance Manager to address unsafe equipment or operational practices
- Review labour requirements and coordinate scheduling to ensure adequate staffing levels across vessels
- Partner with Human Resources on workforce planning initiatives
- Work closely with the Fleet Mechanical Manager to support proactive maintenance programs
- Participate in additional company projects as required
Qualifications & Experience- Minimum 5 years of operational management experience with direct reports
- Maritime or marine operational experience preferred
- Experience managing employees in a unionized environment is considered an asset
- Valid BC Class 5 Driver's License (or higher) with a clean driver's abstract
- Experience interacting with the public or external customers
- Project management experience is an asset
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and SharePoint
LocationThe successful candidate must currently reside in or be willing to permanently relocate to the Nakusp, BC area. Relocation assistance will be provided.
Working Conditions- Work is primarily performed onboard freshwater vessels and within ship repair facility environments
- Work environments may be impacted by weather conditions, including hot, cold, or wet conditions
- Occasional projects may require lifting, extended work hours, and working around heavy-duty equipment
- Occasional operation of equipment such as crane trucks, loaders, or tugboats may be required
- Daytime travel between work sites is required
Work ScheduleMonday to Friday, 7:00 AM - 4:00 PM, or as operational requirements dictate.
