Position/Title: Shunt Driver, Class 1 / 5
Reporting To: Terminal Manager/Operations Manager
Location: Calgary, AB
Shift: 11pm - 8am
License: Class #1/5, Current. (less than 4 demerits) Abstract along with 2 years’ commercial driving experience required; Shunt Driver experience
General Responsibilities:- Operate Shunt tractor – move trailers to dock doors for loading and unloading of freight for Dock Operations; ensure Depot Yards well organized and clean.
Specific Responsibilities:- Operate Shunt Tractor to move equipment for safe loading/unloading of freight as directed.
- Report to Operations Management/Dispatch for all equipment logistics and moves to schedule for midnight shift withing the yard, terminal and shop yard as required.
- Report damage to Dispatch/Operations Manager and Shop Manager, and Dock Supervisors.
- Control operation of vehicle and equipment as trained and licensed
- Comply with National Safety Code and Provincial Highway / Traffic regulations
- Comply with Transportation of Dangerous Goods Clear Language regulations
- Comply with highway weigh scale procedures as directed by transportation officials
- Observe all company rules, policies and procedures with regards to quality control, Occupational Health and Safety, etc.
- Operate PDA’s and cell phones for communication with dispatch, complying with applicable laws for communication devices.
- Meet schedules and deadlines and drive in all weather and yard conditions
- Hook and unhook trailers.
- Keep accurate drivers’ logs as required to document mileage, hours and material hauled
- Wearing of job specific PPE clothing, masks, glasses or visors
- Keep vehicles clean inside and out
- Attach chains to tires when required
- Advise dispatch of all incidents and injuries immediately.
- Perform sundry duties as assigned by the Terminal Manager, dispatch or superior.
Job Hazards:- Improper parking of vehicle on uneven ground causes a situation of rolling and possible injury due to being caught between your vehicle and a wall or oncoming traffic
- Not being clearly visible in a warehouse situation can result in being hit by warehouse traffic.
- Improper use of dock equipment can cause a fall from the dock.
- Over lifting or stacking heavy objects above head level causing undue strain on shoulders and neck. If the object falls it can cause serious injury to upper and/or lower torso.
- Be aware of Improperly setting a dock plate can cause a fall between truck and dock.
- Riding in the back of a loaded vehicle with freight being improperly secured.
- Not securing the load. When the back doors of the vehicle are opened, the freight might land on you and crush you.
- Failure to inspect equipment before moving in yard can cause a problem especially if the load has not been secured properly.
