Your OpportunityThe Department of Civil and Mineral Engineering at the University of Toronto invites applications for a Laboratory Manager to support its geotechnical engineering laboratories.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Director, Technical Services and Operations, and work in close collaboration with faculty on both teaching and research activities. They will manage and contribute to the instruction of undergraduate laboratory courses and research projects across the full research life cycle. Responsibilities include defining testing parameters, preparing specimens, conducting laboratory testing, and assist with occasional fieldwork as required. The Laboratory Manager will process results, write reports, and contribute to scientific publications arising from laboratory and field studies.
In addition, the role involves maintaining, servicing, and troubleshooting laboratory equipment; procuring materials and consumables; and overseeing laboratory operations. The successful candidate will be responsible for laboratory safety, regulatory compliance, training, documentation, and record keeping. They will also engage with the broader professional community, contribute to research proposals and service contracts, and support collaborations with academic and industry partners.
Your Responsibilities Will Include- Overseeing day-to-day operational needs for one or more labs/workshops
- Performing lab experiments that requires great precision and attention to many details
- Liaising with course instructors to coordinate experiment set-up to compliment theoretical material
- Providing detailed explanations and demonstrating procedures to students and/or employees on lab techniques, experimental procedures and protocols.
- Analyzing lab reports and drafting content for funding applications and research papers
- Contributing to research findings that are published in academic journals
- Ensuring that the material needs of laboratory exercises and/or courses are available
- Providing safety training and ensuring compliance to lab safety procedures and standards
Essential Qualifications- Master's Degree in Geotechnical Engineering or acceptable combination of equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years of experience in geotechnical engineering.
- Advanced understanding of soil mechanics and foundation engineering.
- Hands-on familiarity with advanced geotechnical lab tests, such as: Triaxial testing, Direct Simple Shear Testing, Consolidation testing.
- Ability to maintain and calibrate lab equipment.
- Knowledge of lab setup for teaching experiments and demonstrations.
- Strong understanding of lab safety protocols.
- Ability to instruct or assist students during lab sessions.
- Clear communication skills—explaining concepts and interpretation of lab test results to undergrads and graduate students.
- Lifting and carrying samples and equipment up to 25 kg.
Assets (Nonessential)- Experience in geotechnical laboratory testing or a PhD in Geotechnical Engineering is considered an asset.
