Role OverviewProvide health, safety and environmental support to the project staff, workforce, and Health Safety & Environment departments. Where required, provide advice to project staff and key stakeholders.
Thiess is seeking a Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Coordinator which is a project-based role to support our mining team. The HSE Coordinator is a key role, working with all functions of the business. Duties will include coordination of daily HSE functions and support activities, input into the Thiess HSE data and incident management systems.
The HSE Coordinator will be required to work independently and collaboratively with other North American HSE team members and the North American regional leadership. They will also warn the Regional HSE Director about process deficiencies or schedule slippage and will be skilled in computer programs and developing databases, spreadsheets, presentations and HSE literature.
Key ResponsibilitiesLEADERSHIP, GOVERNANCE & REPORTING- Reports to the Health Safety Environment Supervisor.
- Acts as the Thiess representative for environmental performance in accordance with ISO 14001 requirements.
- Provides guidance, support and supervision to personnel assigned to support project HSE functions.
- Maintains effective working relationships with internal stakeholders (engineering, operations, contracts) and with clients, contractors and subcontractors to coordinate and implement the Contractor Management System (CMS) and its HSE requirement.
- Develops, consolidates and delivers accurate daily, weekly and monthly HSE reports for project and North American regional distribution.
- Delivers monthly regional reporting on all on-site HSE activities, events and performance trends to ensure accurate communication and compliance.
- Recognizes areas for improvement and provides sound, data-driven recommendations to the Health Safety Environmental Supervisor and Functional HSE leadership.
RISK MANAGEMENT, CRITICAL CONTROLS & CHANGE- Leads and supports the identification of Critical Risks and the verification of Critical Controls, ensuring high-risk hazards are effectively managed and control effectiveness is monitored and reported.
- Works with appropriate work groups to analyze workplace risks, implement controls, and develop effective corrective action plans.
- Actively participates in Management of Change (MoC) processes, providing HSE input into operational, technical and organizational changes to ensure risks are identified and controlled prior to implementation.
- Actively participates in Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, workplace inspections and safety audits.
- Coordinates with the Project Manager to obtain approval on work releases where required.
INCIDENT MANAGEMENT, ASSURANCE & SYSTEMS- Conducts and assists with incident investigations, performs root cause analysis, and monitors corrective action plans in Synergy to ensure effective resolution and alignment with organizational objectives.
- Tracks deliverables, action items and corrective actions across the project using Synergy software.
- Conducts and supports internal HSE audits and assurance activities, participates in external, client and regulatory audits, and tracks audit findings through to close-out.
- Analyzes HSE performance trends and leading indicators (hazards, incidents, inspections, critical controls) and provides insights to project and regional leadership.
HEALTH, ENVIRONMENT & EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS- Is accountable for implementing, inspecting, monitoring and reporting on environmental requirements and compliance obligations on site.
- Manages and tracks environmental permits, approvals and compliance conditions, ensuring requirements are implemented, monitored and non-compliances are identified and addressed.
- Coordinates and supports occupational hygiene programs including noise, dust, diesel particulate matter, vibration and other exposure monitoring in accordance with Ontario Regulation 854.
- Develops, implements and maintains site emergency response plans, supports emergency drills and exercises, and liaises with emergency services and project leadership during emergency
