About the RoleThe HR Consultant – Payroll & Benefits is a detail-oriented, client-facing role focused on delivering accurate, timely, and compliant payroll and benefits support to primarily U.S.-based clients (with some Canadian exposure).
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys owning processes end-to-end, working with data, and being a reliable operational partner to clients. You will play a critical role in ensuring payroll accuracy, benefits administration, reporting, and system integrity—while building strong relationships with client stakeholders.
Key ResponsibilitiesPayroll Operations & Review- Manage and support end-to-end payroll processes across multiple U.S. clients (and some Canadian payroll)
- Review and approve payrolls for accuracy, compliance, and completeness
- Partner with payroll providers and internal systems to resolve discrepancies
- Ensure proper handling of multi-state payroll considerations (U.S.)
Benefits Administration- Administer employee benefits programs, including enrollments, changes, and terminations
- Support U.S. open enrollment processes and Canadian renewals
- Ensure benefit rate updates are accurate and implemented on time
- Act as liaison between clients, brokers, and benefit providers
Reconciliations & Reporting- Perform regular payroll and benefits reconciliations (monthly, quarterly, year-end)
- Support financial alignment between payroll, benefits, and accounting records
- Prepare and deliver recurring and ad hoc reports for clients
- Analyze payroll and benefits data to identify trends, discrepancies, or risks
Year-End & Compliance Support- Support year-end payroll activities including W-2 preparation and review
- Assist with benefits-related compliance and reporting, including:
- 401(k) testing (e.g., ADP/ACP)
- Non-discrimination testing (NDT)
- Ensure data accuracy and readiness for audits and filings
Systems & Data Management- Maintain and update HRIS, payroll, and benefits systems
- Ensure data integrity across systems and platforms
- Support system implementations, transitions, and process improvements
Client Support & Communication- Act as a primary or secondary point of contact for assigned clients
- Respond to payroll and benefits-related inquiries in a timely, professional manner
- Partner with client stakeholders to identify needs and improve processes
- Build strong, trust-based working relationships
Qualifications- 3+ years of experience in payroll and benefits administration (U.S. experience required)
- Strong understanding of U.S. payroll processes (multi-state exposure preferred)
- Experience with benefits administration, including open enrollment cycles
- Familiarity with payroll compliance, reporting, and reconciliations
- Exposure to Canadian payroll and benefits is an asset
- Experience with HRIS/payroll systems (e.g., Paylocity, TriNet, Sequoia, Gusto, etc.)
- Strong Excel / data analysis skills
- High attention to detail and accuracy
- Excellent organizational and time management skills in a multi-client environment
- Strong communication and client service skills
