RISK & CONTROL SPECIALIST – IT & SOXThe RoleThe Risk & Control Specialist – IT & SOX supports Algoma’s internal audit and compliance obligations, with primary responsibility for evaluating and testing Information Technology (IT) controls that support Internal Controls over Financial Reporting (ICFR). This role ensures the appropriate design, documentation, testing, and remediation of IT General Controls (ITGCs) and IT Application Controls (ITACs) in alignment with Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX 404) and NI 52-109 requirements.
The role works collaboratively with IT, Finance, and other internal and external stakeholders, including the external auditor, and contributes to a strong control environment through recommendations for continuous improvement and support of key audit activities.
Key Accountabilities- Participate in & contribute to the assessment, planning, and execution of SOX IT controls testing, including ITGCs and ITACs, in alignment with internal methodologies and external standards
- Evaluate the design and operating effectiveness of IT controls related to access management, change management, system development, IT operations and similar
- Prepare clear and complete documentation, including test plans, test results, process narratives, and control walkthroughs. Ensure effective use of AuditBoard SOX Hub platform
- Identify control deficiencies, assess the financial reporting impact and conduct follow-up testing; support management with effective remediation
- Provide input on controls impacted by system implementations, upgrades, and significant configuration changes. Contribute effectively to non-IT ICFR controls testing, documentation and liaison when needed
- Collaborate with IT and Finance teams to improve the overall ICFR framework, and contribute to Operational audits and special projects, including business process reviews, data analytics, investigations and such others when needed
Core Competencies and Skills Required- University degree in Information Systems, Computer Science, Accounting, or related discipline
- 4 – 6 years in IT audit, ICFR, internal audit or similar roles
- Knowledge of SOX, NI 52-109, ITGCs, and ITACs
- Experience with ERP systems (SAP preferred)
- Familiarity with SOX platforms (e.g., AuditBoard)
- Strong documentation, communication, and analytical skills
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities within strict timelines
- Comfortable with cross-functional collaboration and external audit interactions
- Preferred:
- CPA / CIA or similar designation
- CISA designation

The annual salary range for this position is $98,982.00 - $123,701.00, commensurate with education and experience. In addition to a competitive salary, Algoma Steel offers a performance-based bonus plan, a long-term incentive plan, a comprehensive benefits package, and a defined contribution pension plan.
