Eligibility

• Must be between 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment; and
• Must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act for the duration of the employment
• Must have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

BlueAct Marine Society is a charitable subsidiary of the Gibsons Community Building Society. The vision of BlueAct is to support an educated community that actively cares for the health of the ocean. BlueAct operates the Nicholas Sonntag TidePools Aquarium. TidePools Aquarium is a marine education centre and community aquarium featuring a collect and release model of animal husbandry, located in the Gibsons Public Market. Situated in the picturesque town of Gibsons on the Sunshine Coast, we are a stone's throw from iconic Howe Sound, Sechelt Inlet and the Skookumchuck Rapids supporting a rich diversity of marine life. Role Overview

The role of Marine Education Ambassador is a dynamic position with a myriad of duties that will include all or some of the following tasks.

• Providing visitors and groups to our community aquarium with excellent interpretative tours and floor programs. You will uphold our high level of visitor experience, and from time to time, support with admissions, sales, and cash handling.
• Assist with animal care and biological monitoring of the life support systems. You will be responsible for maintaining the appearance and cleanliness of the facility and exhibits.
• Support the delivery of our marine science school programs in June and co-lead our summer camp programs for children and youth in July and August.
• Deliver community outreach programs, partaking in events, stewardship initiatives and conservation activities. We work as a dynamic and collaborative team to achieve a high level of program delivery throughout the summer.

The Typical Job Duties Include

• Greeting and orienting visitors;
• Providing one-on-one interpretive tours of exhibits;
• Co-leading school and summer camp programs;
• Assisting in developing and delivering interpretive programs;
• Assisting in maintaining displays and providing high-quality animal care;
• Feeding animals (fish and invertebrates);
• Represent BlueAct in the community at events and in outreach capacities;
• Assist with social media management, content creation, and website updates for TidePools Aquarium, and support the monthly newsletter to raise awareness.
• Perform daily routine cleanliness to maintain the appearance of our facility building, interpretive panels, props and materials. These tasks will include sweeping, mopping, washing, etc.;
• Partake in animal collection and conservation fieldwork;
• Cash handling and admissions;
• Other duties to support the marine education centre as required.

Qualifications

• A strong passion for the ocean, marine species, and environmental education and protection
• A willingness to learn new skills and work cooperatively with a team

Assets

• Currently studying biological sciences, marine biology, environmental studies, education, outdoor recreation or a related field.
• Knowledge of local intertidal and subtidal marine species and ecology
• Aquarium and animal husbandry experience considered an asset
• Experience working with children and youth
• Supervisory experiences such as with volunteers or other projects
• At least one season of interpretation experience considered an asset
• Valid driver’s license
• A vehicle
