Trades Technician

Qualifications:- Alberta Journeyperson Certificate in Carpentry or Welding
- Inter-provincial Red Seal Certificate
- Three (3) years’ post-Journeyperson work experience
- Excellent organization and communication skills
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- A valid Class 5 driver’s license
- A clean vulnerable sector criminal record check prior to commencement
- A combination of education, training, and experience may be considered
Assets:- Valid Class 1 driver’s license
Nature and Scope of Work:Reporting to the Chair, Trades & Resource Technology, the Trades Technician provides support to the Trades and Resource Technology department to ensure the efficient and safe delivery of apprenticeship programs. Responsibilities include inventory management; sourcing, pricing, and ordering supplies; preparing materials for student use; maintenance and setup of equipment; and maintaining general shop and tool room organization. The Trades Technician contributes to a safe work environment for staff and students and is an integral member of a diverse team, able to work effectively both collaboratively and independently. Strong organizational, time management, and computer skills are essential to support departmental operations.
Duties and Responsibilities:Preparing Materials for Student Use- Prepare material for lab projects as requested.
- Organize and package class material into individual projects for each intake as required
Inventory- Assess and calculate the required materials/inventory required for the academic year’s intakes according to approved schedules
- Maintain inventory throughout the year
- Receive and store inventory as it is delivered
- Inventory Management by creating inventory lists and implementing tracking systems
- Tracking inventory movements into a database (Access)
Sourcing, Pricing and Ordering Supplies- Research and source materials/equipment required for the year
- Secure the best price and quality of materials/equipment as per policy, with suppliers
- Review budgets with supervisor on an ongoing basis to ensure needs are met within approved budget
Set-up and Maintenance of Equipment- Monitor condition and ensure all equipment (power and hand tools) is maintained appropriately
- Replace worn or damaged parts as required
- Assemble new equipment as required
- General shop & tool room organization
- Store equipment and materials in an organized manner to ensure efficient shop use
- Assist with other tasks as required.
Skills/Knowledge:- Knowledge of the construction trades
- Well-versed in materials and lab equipment
